Rocket explosions in Al- Arish, death toll rises to 8

One security officer and 7 civilians were killed, including a child, Ministry of Interior

By Menna Zaki

Three rockets explosions occurred Sunday night in Al-Arish, Northern Sinai, with two  targeting a military camp and the other hitting the Al-Salam suburb of the town.

The explosions left 7 civilians and 1 security officer dead and 28 injured. The injured were taken to Al-Arish general hospital.

The armed forces issued a press release expressing their resolve to continue to “uproot terrorism”, asserting that the attacks would not stop them from defending the security and stability of the country.

According to the interior ministry spokesman, security forces are looking into the details of the explosions and the militants who implemented the operation.

In June, unidentified gunmen shot dead four police officers in Sinai. Also in Sinai, state-run MENA said gunmen attempted to attack a police officer on his way to work, instead shooting two men accompanying the officer, leaving him unharmed.

The Egyptian Organisation for Human Rights (EOHR) condemned the attack and called for the immediate apprehension of the assailants. According to Human Rights Watch, the bombings resulted in the killing of 8 persons and the injury of 33.

Hafez Abu Eida, head of EOHR, said that the incidents that target individuals and facilities are “unacceptable”. He added that such attacks should be confronted by civil forces while utilising counterterrorist measures which safeguard human rights.
