Prosecutor General receives Russian report on plane crash

Local investigative committee examines aircraft technical history

The Egyptian investigative committee handling the Russian plane crash case said Thursday it submitted a report to Prosecutor General Nabil Sadek.

A committee press release quoting Ayman El-Moqadem, head of the committee, said the report was sent by Russian investigative authorities received Monday, to include their collected information in the case.

Meanwhile, the local committee is currently in the process of a technical study of the  Metrojet A321 since its manufacturing in 1997 until its crash over Sinai on 31 October 2015, including all repairs the plane witnessed. “This could take a while,”El-Moqadem said Thursday

He added that examination of the aircraft wreckage and collected evidence will be followed by regrouping remains of the plane together so that experts can determine how the plane fragmented.

El-Moqadem had stated during a November press conference that the plane fragmented in air, and therefore plane wreckage extended over 13 km after crashing. More than 200 passengers abroad were killed, including children.

Although official investigations under Egyptian-Russian cooperation are yet to conclude, the crash is strongly believed to have been caused by a bomb planted on the aircraft. Last February, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi told the public for the first time that the “Russian plane was downed.”

Two weeks after the crash, the Islamic State (IS) group claimed to have used a drink-can bomb to bring down the plane.
