Egypt, UN Special Envoy discuss ceasefire in Syria

UN Special Envoy for Syria informs Shoukry about details of ceasefire

Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shoukry received a phone call from the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, on Tuesday to discuss the latest updates regarding the situation in Syria.

De Mistura informed Shoukry about the results and details of the ceasefire and truce in Syria, which the United States (US) and Russia agreed on in Geneva.

He also highlighted the importance of Egypt’s role in supporting the agreement by urging different Syrian parties to implement the ceasefire agreement.

Shoukry confirmed the significance of working hard to resume political negotiations at the earliest opportunity, while ensuring the participation of all Syrian parties.

Both sides agreed to start comprehensive negotiations to reach a lasting political solution for the Syrian crisis.

On 8 September, US secretary of state John Kerry and Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov announced a plan to bring about a ceasefire in Syria.

Shoukry welcomed the agreement and said that this truce will help end the humanitarian crisis in Syria that resulted from continuous violence.

The Syrian civil war was sparked during the Arab Spring in 2011, and armed political factions have been in conflict ever since.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, tens of thousands of Syrians are missing, detained, and killed each year amid severe political turmoil.
