Press Syndicate in solidarity with chief media regulator

Supreme Media Council head Makram Mohamed Ahmed will be interrogated by prosecution on Wednesday

The Press Syndicate announced on Sunday that it stands in solidarity with Supreme Media Council head Makram Mohamed Ahmed after an interrogation session with him is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

The syndicate earlier demanded the prosecution to postpone the interrogation to Wednesday.

Makram is accused of ordering a “void” media gag on the recent investigations into 57357 Children Cancer Hospital’s alleged accusations of corruption, a step that was denounced by the General Prosecution, which considered the move as a violation of executive and judicial powers.

The head of the syndicate, Abdel Mohsen Salama, is to attend the interrogation with Makram, which will take place at Egypt’s State Security Prosecution, according to the Sunday statement.

A lawyer from the syndicate will also attend the interrogation. Since the prosecution announced that it will hold an interrogation with Makram, he has been on the defence, saying that it is part of his council’s powers according to the law regulating the work of the council, which states that it can “suspend airing some TV shows and publishing reports regarding some specific issues.”

Salama told privately owned newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm that the incident has highlighted two aspects: one negative and one positive. The negative includes the interrogation, as he thinks Makram violated the judicial powers. On the positive side, Salama argued that the prosecution’s intervention is a step “to support freedom.”
