Al-Sisi receives Eritrean President in Cairo

Both addressed bolstering cooperation in various fields, issues of common interest

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi received his Eritrean counterpart, Isaias Afwerki, on Saturday in Cairo in his two-day visit to Egypt, according to a Saturday presidency statement.

During the meeting, both addressed bilateral relations, bolstering cooperation in various fields, and regional issues of common interest.

Egypt and Eritrea are keen on enhancing bonds and held regular meetings and mutual visits. Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki visited Egypt more than 16 times with the aim to strengthen mutual relations, according to Egypt’s State Information Service (SIS).

In November 2016, Afwerki visited Cairo and met with Al-Sisi. Both leaders agreed on having regular visits of delegations from both countries to ensure that bilateral cooperation is moving toward positive paths.

Regarding economic bilateral relations, Egyptian exports to Eritrea reach $47.79m, including flour, paintings, cement, and dairy products, the state information service (SIS) stated. Meanwhile, “Eritrea’s imports stand at $5.6m, mainly agricultural products and roasted coffee,” the SIS added.

Earlier in April, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh in Cairo. Both discussed mutual cooperation projects in a number of priority areas for the Eritrean side such as establishing a fish feed factory, setting up two power plants, cooperation in fishing, and implementing a number of infrastructural projects.
